Celebrating MLK and Dreaming of Desert Lands

This Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. day, and I am glad to work for an organization that allows us to celebrate his life and work as a holiday from the office. I took this day to do something that I have never done before in my 8.5 years in Chicago: visit the Garfield Park Conservatory.

Beautiful. Simply beautiful.

It was really other-worldly, especially the Desert Room. To step out of the barely-above-freezing temperatures into a bright 75-degree space, full of green and vibrant life.

I found a quiet bench to eat my lunch and read some of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s early writings. I couldn't imagine a more peaceful way to spend the day.

I thought you were gonna say that you were going to a desert island for Spring Break or something! The Conservatory is a close second though...

What a nice way to spend a day off and remember a remarkable man.

Accept, O Lord, my thanks and praise for all that you have done for me. I thank you for the splendor of the whole creation, for the beauty of this world, for the wonder of life, and for the mystery of love. Above all, I thank you for your Son Jesus Christ; for the truth of His Word and the example of his life; for his steadfast obedience, by which he overcame death; and for his rising to life again, in which we are raised to the life of your kingdom. Amen.
